Understanding Teen Depression: Teen depression is common, with one in five adolescents experiencing it, but it's often untreated. It's a serious health issue affecting all aspects of a teen's life.

Signs of Teen Depression: Look for persistent negative mood, problems at school, loss of interest in activities, running away, drug and alcohol abuse, low self-esteem, smartphone addiction, reckless behavior, and sudden changes in sleep and diet.

Difference Between Teen and Adult Depression: Teens may exhibit irritability, unexplained aches and pains, extreme sensitivity to criticism, and withdrawing from some but not all people.

Suicide Warning Signs: Take suicidal thoughts or behaviors seriously. Signs include talking or joking about suicide, saying things like "I'd be better off dead," and giving away prized possessions.

Causes of Teen Depression: Biological factors, bullying, other mental and physical health conditions, past and present stressful experiences, lack of social support, and substance abuse can trigger or worsen depression.

Impact of Social Media: Excessive use of social media can contribute to teen depression due to comparisons, fear of missing out (FOMO), and decreased physical activity and sleep.

Communication with Depressed Teens: Focus on listening, acknowledge their feelings, and trust your instincts if you suspect something is wrong. Encourage them to talk to trusted adults or professionals.

Encourage Social Connection: Combat social isolation by making face time a priority, reducing social media use, and getting teens involved in activities and volunteer work.

Prioritize Physical Health: Encourage exercise, set limits on screen time, provide balanced meals, and ensure adequate sleep to support mental health.

Seek Professional Help When Needed: If symptoms are severe or don't improve with lifestyle changes, seek help from mental health professionals. Include your teen in treatment decisions and be aware of the risks and benefits of medication.
